Roman Mosaic 2-3rd c.
EUROPA & ASTYPALAIA
In this large mosaic, about 1 by 2 meters, found in one of the excavated Roman villa's in Zeugma, amidts many other mosaics, Europa and bull/Zeus are accompanied by Astypalaia riding Posseidon in the form of a fishtailed goat, named Agipan ( kind of goatish god). From Poseidon and Astypalaia were born Ancaeus , king of Samos, who took the helm of the ship Argos, and Eurypylos, king of Cos. It is the first time that the two sisters, Europa and Astypalaia, are portrayed together.

The ruins of Zeugma are on the border of the present Turkish town Belkis. The Romans conquered the town from the Hellenistic Seleucid empire. The Roman Scythian legion was stationed there and Zeugma became one of the most important garrison cities of the empire in the 1st and 2nd c.AD. Excavations started in 1987. The mosaics can be admired at the Gaziantep Museum in Turkey.

Additional Info. Czechian painter TF Simon, (see Comments, dec 2005)
Apparently, Simon painted a second oil with Europa and the bull, but its whereabouts are unknown. The only reference is a foto of TF Simon and some brother artists with in the background a painting standing on a chair, featuring Europa on the bull Zeus. The photo was taken in 1938 at the exhibition of his work for his sixtieth birthday.

On the painting Europa is visible and one horn of the bull. The painting shows some similarities with the colour etching shown in Comments dec.2005
Who can save this painting from oblivion?

British Literature
The British cavalier poet, Richard Lovelace,1618-1657, wrote intricate poems. Some say over-elaborated and difficult to decipher its meaning. He was a staunch royalist under king Charles I and got imprissonned for his idealism under Cromwell. He was from noble descent and fought amongst others in the Low Countries.
In a long poem he recalls a pastorall day of Amarantha in the fields and forests and her meeting with Alexis. In his poem Amarantha: a pastorall, of almost 400 lines, he memorizes The myth of Europa and Zeus
Her stemme, show 'tis a god-like race.
Descending in a even line,
From heifers and from steeres divine,
Making the honour'd extract full
In Io and Europa's bull."

He designed, painted, made stained glass, woodcuts, and moviedécors. His painting represents many different styles from primitive to postimpressionistic, to abstract. Scenes from mythology he used only occasionally. Among which the Europa myth.

Of course the European Union has become the political entity representing Europe and in many cartoons the European press and media make use of "Europa and bull-Zeus" as its symbol, its representation. This fact was more than confirmed by the political leaders of the States forming the European Union in their meeting on the future of Europe in April this year. It happened at the date of the birthday of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barrosa. He was presented with a beautiful birthdaycake, representing, of course the symbol of the European Union, Europa sitting on the beautiful white bull/Zeus.
